Woman Injured in Bear Attack in Shangus, Wildlife Teams Deployed

Srinagar,  KNT: A wild bear attacked two people in the Andoo Nowgam area of Shangus in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Sunday, leaving a woman critically injured and a man with minor wounds. Officials said the incident occurred in a residential belt, triggering panic among locals.

The victims were identified as Shahnaz Begum, wife of Muhammad Kallu Khan, and Muhammad Rafiq Khan, son of Ghulam Hider Khan. Both were shifted to SDH Shangus soon after the attack. Doctors at the hospital said that Rafiq Khan received treatment locally, while Shahnaz Begum sustained serious injuries and was referred to SKIMS Soura in Srinagar for advanced care.

Authorities said the Wildlife Control Room at Achabal was alerted immediately after the incident. Teams were sent to the area to track the bear and initiate measures to trap or tranquilize it to prevent further danger to the population.

Wildlife officials said additional steps are being taken to secure the locality and reduce the likelihood of similar incidents in the coming days. [KNT]
