Emulate Delhi model for traffic congestion: Govt directs SMC
The administration in Kashmir has directed the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner to come up with suggestions like Delhi type cluster service model for improvement of traffic management in Srinagar city.
The cluster bus services, which was introduced in New Delhi in the year 2011 by the then Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has so far inducted more than 3000 buses.
A senior government official told that the directions have been issued to SMC Commissioner Athar Amir by the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, P Pole during the meeting chaired by the latter in the third week of this December.
He added that during the meeting, the Divisional Commissioner P K Pole was apprised that only 20-30% sumos/passenger vehicles are being operated by the public transport agencies while 60-70% of such traffic is a wanderer.
“The Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, P K Pole then directed that the Commissioner SMC shall come with a suggestion like Delhi type clusters with a suggestion service model”. Adding that he said, “Div. Com also directed that Srinagar Development Authority and Regional Transport Officer Kashmir shall come up with the suggestion that if SDA land can be tendered to private transporters for starting of their services”.
The official added that Div. Com Kashmir also passed directions regard to mobility plans. The official added that the administration directed the Chief Town Planner Kashmir to come up with the recommendation for the establishment of a taxi stand in the light of the mobility plan of the master plan in vogue.
An official further said, “The Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, P K Pole also directed Regional Transport Officer, Kashmir shall explore the possibility of reviewing of the route permits issued vehicle wise (on and offline) and online status of same as well as renewal status within two weeks positively”.
The Div. Com Kashmir, P K Pole also directed that Superintending Engineer, Circular Road Project shall frame a comprehensive and specific agenda for HLC with regard to bottlenecks in Srinagar city, he added.
