BWF World Championships: Lakshya Sen, K Srikanth & HS Prannoy progress to Men’s Singles 2nd round

Indian shuttlers Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, and HS Prannoy have progressed to the Men’s Singles second round at BWF World Championships in Tokyo. 9th-Seeded Lakshya Sen defeated Danish veteran HK Solberg Vittinghus in his opening match 21-12, 21-11. Sen will next face Spaniard Luis Penalver.

World championships silver-medallist Kidambi Srikanth overpowered Irishman Nhat Nguyen 22-20, 21-19. Srikanth will take on talented Chinese youngster Zhao Jun Peng in the next round. HS Prannoy also joined his compatriots in the second round of Men’s Singles after beating Luka Wraber of Austria 21-12, 21-11.

Prannoy will play against former two-time world champion Kento Momota of Japan in the second round. Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal will begin her campaign today when she faces Ngan Yi Cheung of Hong Kong in the first round.

Former Commonwealth Games bronze medallists Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy progressed to the women’s doubles second round with a 21-7, 21-9 win over Maldives’ Aminath Abdul Razzaq and Fathimath Abdul Razzaq.

The Indian duo will next face top seeds Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan of China. In another women’s doubles match, India’s Pooja Dandu and Sanjana Santosh beat the Peru pair of Ines Lucia Salazar and Paula Regal 21-6, 10-21, 21-14.

In mixed doubles, Tanisha Crasto and Ishaan Bhatnagar defeated German duo of Patrick Scheiel and Franziska Volkmann 21-13, 21-13.

The Indian pair will meet 14th seeds Supak Jomkoh and Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand next.
