Society needs to stand up against killing of teachers: LG Sinha
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday said that killing of innocent teachers in the past here was wrong and people need to stand up against such crimes.
“In the past, some people have tried to kill innocent teachers and I think that was the worst level of doing something wrong. I believe that security forces are doing their job and I think now is the time for the societies to stand against those crimes,” he said while speaking during the function of Teachers Day at SKICC.
“A lot of blood has been spilled in Jammu and Kashmir of innocent people. I urge the people to condemn the acts of killing innocent teachers. No religion teaches us to kill innocent teachers and I believe that it is a sin of great kind,” Sinha added.
According to him, the government has decided to start a competition in essay writing on truth and non-violence and debates in all schools and colleges.
“The school education department will do the necessary things in this regard,” the LG added.
Sinha also said that the programme on truth and non-violence would be completed positively and students and teachers will gather in Srinagar on October 2 so that the truth and non-violence will not appear in literature only but in reality too.
“Earlier the programme of Teachers Day was not being celebrated throughout the Jammu and Kashmir but this year, the Teacher Day was celebrated across the Union Territory,” he said.
“This year we awarded ten teachers for doing the best work. This award was meant to be given to ten teachers only; however, I know that there are many teachers also who deserve this award too,” Sinha said.
Speaking about the developments and reforms in the School Education Department, Sinha said, “In Jammu and Kashmir, there has been a huge transformation under the ex Principal Secretary, School Education Department B K Singh. The School Education Department has achieved new heights.”
“It has also brought changes in curriculum and syllabi. Besides, the teachers of the department have also focused hard to teach so that the citizens here could get the education,” he said.
Sinha urged the teachers to give their best efforts to teach the learners and make them focus on their studies and their career because their parents enroll them with a very high expectation that they will come out as educated.
“I believe that the role of the teachers does not only remain confined to teaching only but they shall also prepare them for all challenges,” Sinha said
Later, speaking during the 53rd Foundation Day function of University of Jammu, the LG observed that world is changing rapidly and education along with it.
The Lt Governor emphasized that the real function of education is to nurture talents.
National Education Policy provides us an opportunity to develop our Universities, education institutions as centres of future oriented, value based quality education centres where students get an independent environment to innovate and invent.
Education is the key to open the mind of students. Individual growth and independent thinking is possible only when a student is provided an environment not confined to the classroom and gets an opportunity to nurture creativity and wisdom, the Lt Governor said.
Under the guidance of Prime Minister, we have received an opportunity to make sure that universities are not known as centres of providing degrees but the education and increasing the collaboration between teachers and students, the Lt Governor said.
“Students don’t just need the degree, they need education and it is possible only with increased involvement and collaboration with teachers”, he added.
Highlighting the major initiatives of the University of Jammu, the Lt Governor attributed the establishment of Special Purpose Vehicle Foundation in November 2020 as a major milestone and a significant step towards promoting a culture of Start-ups, Industry-Academic Partnership, Innovation and Incubation in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
