IFFI screens 7 restored Indian movies under ‘Restored Classics’ section in Goa
The 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is screening 7 recently restored Indian movies under ‘Restored Classics’ section in Goa. These include three iconic Bollywood films – ‘Guide’ directed by Vijay Anand, ‘Haqeeqat’ directed by Chetan Anand, and ‘Bees Saal Baad’ directed by Biren Nag.
Four regional language films that are being shown by IFFI under Restored Classics are Bengali movie ‘Vidyapati’ directed by Debaki Bose, Marathi film ‘Shyamchi Aai’ by PK Are, Telugu film ‘Patala Bhairavi’ by KV Reddy, and Bengali film ‘Chorus’ by Mrinal Sen. In addition to this, three internationally restored films are also being showcased in this section.
These include ‘The Exorcist Extended Director’s Cut’ by William Friedkin, ‘Twilight’ by Gyorgy Feher and Sergei Parajanov’s ‘Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors’. The reels of these films have not just been digitised, they have been restored by repairing the scratch marks and other damages. Restoration and digitisation of old films is an ambitious programme initiated across the globe of late. Nearly 6,000 films, including documentaries, are being preserved under the National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM) in India. Nearly 2,500 films of various languages have been carefully restored so far.
