AQI plunges below 70 as gusty winds clear pollution from Valley

Srinagar,  KNT: Air quality across Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a dramatic improvement following strong gusty winds, with pollution levels dropping sharply in several areas that were earlier grappling with severe air pollution.

According to independent air quality monitors, locations that had been recording Air Quality Index levels between 300 and 400, categorised as very poor to severe, have now reported AQI readings below 70 after sustained winds swept across the region. The improvement has been described as significant and rapid.

The sudden drop in pollution levels is being attributed to strong winds that helped disperse accumulated pollutants, dust and smoke trapped over the region during the prolonged dry spell and cold conditions. Weather observers said the windstorm effectively flushed out stagnant air, leading to clearer skies and improved visibility.

Several urban and semi-urban areas of the Valley, including Srinagar and surrounding localities, recorded visibly cleaner air following the wind event. Locals reported a noticeable improvement in breathing conditions, especially during early morning and evening hours.

Experts said while the improvement is encouraging, sustained clean air levels would depend on continued weather activity and reduced local emissions. They cautioned that air quality could deteriorate again if calm conditions return.

Authorities have advised inhabitants to take advantage of the improved air quality while continuing to follow advisories related to the prevailing weather conditions.
