Two-Day Orientation Programme For Newly Elected Members Of Legislative Assembly Begins In West Bengal

A two-day orientation programme for the newly elected Members of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly has been inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla today at the New Town Convention Centre in Kolkata. He was given a guard of honour before the inauguration ceremony. The programme started with the lighting of the lamp.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju, Deputy Chairperson of Rajya Sabha Harivansh, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Legislative Assembly Ritabrata Banerjee, Speaker of West Bengal Legislative Assembly Rathindra Bose, Speakers of other states’ Legislative Assemblies and other dignitaries were present in the inaugural ceremony on 3rd July.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Orientation Programme, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said Shyama Prasad Mukherjee significantly contributed to the efforts of the inclusion of present day West Bengal into India in the then legislative council of Bengal in 1947.

He said the democratic system and legislative processes had completely collapsed during the earlier government of West Bengal. Today, the people of Bengal changed the situation through the ballot. Suvendu Adhikari said the treasury and opposition benches in the Legislative Assembly should work hand in hand to make Bengal great again. He mentioned the motto of Vikash Bhi our Virasat Bhi.

A series of technical sessions would be taken up in the two-day-long orientation programme, including ‘ how to be an effective legislator, customs, conventions and etiquettes for MLAs’, ‘ executive accountability through questions and other procedural devices in legislature’ and ‘National E-Vidhan Application’.

The orientation programme will conclude at the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on 4th July, where the valedictory address will be given by R. N. Ravi, Governor of West Bengal. The orientation programme has been designed by the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracy, PRIDE, in collaboration with the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
