Flash Floods Inundate Several Villages in Budgam After Fresh Spell of Heavy Rain
Budgam, KNT: Fresh heavy rainfall on Tuesday triggered flash floods in several villages of Budgam district after local streams overflowed, inundating low-lying areas and disrupting normal life.
Among the worst-affected areas were Kangripora, Rawatpora, Khanpora and Shunglipora, where floodwaters spread into residential localities and surrounding areas following hours of incessant rain. Reports from the affected villages said overflowing streams caused panic among residents, while waterlogging was reported at several locations.
Though there were no immediate reports of casualties, residents expressed concern over the rapidly rising water levels and feared further damage if the rainfall continued.
The latest flooding comes barely a day after Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Akshay Labroo, had directed all departments to remain on high alert in view of the weather forecast. During a preparedness review meeting, the Deputy Commissioner had instructed officials to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of vulnerable locations, maintain robust disaster preparedness and respond swiftly to any emergency arising from the adverse weather conditions.
Following Tuesday’s flooding, officials from the district administration and other line departments monitored the situation in the affected villages, while emergency response teams remained on standby to deal with any escalation.
Authorities have advised residents living near streams and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary movement and immediately report any emergency to the district administration or the concerned control rooms.
The fresh spell of rain has also affected several other parts of Jammu and Kashmir, with flash floods, overflowing nallahs, landslides and waterlogging reported from multiple districts over the past 24 hours. [KNT]
