Protest Erupts in R.S. Pura Village Over Smart Meter Installation
Jammu, KNT: Tension prevailed in a village in the R.S. Pura area of Jammu district on Wednesday after residents staged a protest against the installation of smart electricity meters and allegedly uprooted several newly installed units.
Eyewitnesses said a large number of villagers assembled to oppose the ongoing installation drive, alleging that smart meters would lead to higher electricity bills and place an additional financial burden on consumers.
During the protest, some residents removed the newly fitted meters and demanded that the installation process be halted until their concerns were addressed.
The demonstrators urged the administration and the Power Development Department to initiate dialogue with local residents before proceeding with the rollout of smart meters in the area.
The incident adds to a series of protests witnessed in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the introduction of smart electricity meters, with consumers repeatedly raising concerns over billing and affordability. [KNT]
