Drug abuse on rise in J&K, says NCRB report
The cases of drug abuse are on rise in Jammu and Kashmir, says the report by National Crime Record Bureau, NCRB. The report said that 35 percent more cases under NDPS were filed as compared to 2020.
The report came to fore at the time when administration of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is organizing a month long ‘Nasha Mukt Abhiyaan ’ commenced from 1st September, 2022 and constituted a seven member committee headed by Financial Commissioner (Additional Chief Secretary), Home Department Raj Kumar Goel to coordinate the Abhiyaan .
The report states that 1,222 cases under NDPS, 1985 act were registered in J&K in 2020, however, the number has increased to 1,681 in 2021. In 2020, among 1,222 cases registered, 289 cases were those where a convict was found to be in possession of drugs for personal use or consumption while 933 cases were found to be in possession of drugs for trafficking.
In the year 2021, among 1,681 cases registered, 357 cases were those where a convict was found to be in possession of drugs for personal use or consumption while 1,324 cases were found to be in possession of drugs for trafficking.
In 2020, 1910 cases were registered under Liquor and Narcotic drugs related acts in J&K while as in year 2021, 2,399 cases were registered under liquor and narcotic drugs related cases.
Further, if the officials in Anti Narcotic Task Force are to be believed, 1055 FIRs under NDPS Act have been registered by the ANTF and arrests of 1634 accused persons made effective in seven months of the current year i.e. till July 2022. The seizures made by the ANTF include Heroin/Brown Sugar- 173.2 Kgs, Charas/Bhang 443 Kgs, Ganja-143 Kgs, Poppy Straw-6626 Kgs, Opium. 3.207 Kgs, Banned Capsules-149568 Nos, Banned Cough Syrup-8017 Nos, conviction under NDPSA-341 (Data upto June 2022), destruction of Poppy Crops-704 Kanals, FIRs registered against illicit cultivators-52 persons, arrested for illicit cultivators-141.
