Ladakh Marathon Announces Record ₹1 Crore Prize Pool for 2026 Edition
Leh, KNT: The Union Territory Administration of Ladakh has announced a record prize pool of ₹1 crore for the 13th edition of the Ladakh Marathon, marking the highest cash reward since the event was launched in 2012.
Scheduled to be held from September 10 to 13, the 2026 edition is expected to attract more than 10,000 participants and visitors, including elite athletes, amateur runners and international competitors, further strengthening Ladakh’s position on the global endurance sports map.
Officials said the enhanced prize money reflects the administration’s efforts to promote sports tourism and raise the international profile of the marathon, which is recognised as the world’s highest AIMS-certified marathon.
Administrative Secretary, Tourism and Culture, Sanjit Rodrigues, said the increased prize purse demonstrates the administration’s commitment to transforming the event into a premier global sporting attraction while showcasing Ladakh’s landscapes, culture and hospitality.
Over the years, the marathon has drawn runners from all Indian states and Union Territories, besides participants from 28 countries, emerging as one of the country’s most prominent endurance events.
Beyond sports, the event has become a significant contributor to Ladakh’s tourism economy. Organisers estimate that this year’s marathon will generate around 70,000 bed nights and inject nearly ₹40-47 crore into the local economy through spending on accommodation, transport, food, shopping and tourism-related activities.
The marathon will feature the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 11.2-km Run, 5-km Run for Fun, besides the challenging 72-km Khardung La Challenge and the 122-km Silk Route Ultra, with ultra-runners competing at altitudes exceeding 17,600 feet.
Organisers said the event will continue to follow its zero single-use plastic policy and other sustainability measures aimed at promoting environmentally responsible tourism. [KNT]
