Sensex, Nifty witness modest gains in afternoon trade

The Sensex and the Nifty witnessed modest gains in the afternoon trade in sync with gains in global share markets.

The Sensex gained 189 points, or 0.33 percent, to trade at 57,334. The Nifty also added 57 points, or 0.34 percent, to trade at 17,074. In the forex market, the rupee appreciated 17 paise to trade at 81 rupees and 46 paise against the US dollar.
