Two-tier panchayat polls begin in Sikkim
In Sikkim, voting is taking place for two-tier panchayat elections today. Polling began at 8 this morning. A total of 1,147-gram panchayat wards will elect new representatives along with 122 Zilla panchayat territorial constituencies across six districts of Gangtok, Namchi, Gyalsing, Soreng, Pakyong and Mangan.
Our correspondent reports, Polling for panchayat elections has started across Sikkim. Among the 1147 gram panchayat wards, 448 remain uncontested while there will be no contest in 19 of the 122 zilla panchayat territorial constituencies.
There is a 50 percent seat reservation for women for both gram and zilla panchayat polls. There area a total of 3 lakh 60 thousand 342 voters, including 1 lakh 81 thousand 693 males and 1 lakh 78 thousand 649 females.
They will decide the fate of 1675 candidates fighting for gram panchayat wards and 408 candidates in zilla panchayat territorial constituencies. The results will be declared on 12th November 2022.
