J&K records 9.47% increase in criminal cases: Report

There has been an overall increase of 2739 criminal cases (9.47%) in the total registration of cases in Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2021.

However, there has been a decline in offence cases such as rape, eve teasing and murders in the Union Territory.

The data has been revealed in Crime Gazette 2021, which was released by Director General Police Dilbag Singh last month.

“During the year 2021, 31675 cases were registered as against 28396 cases during the year 2020 in Jammu and Kashmir”, it reads.

As per the crime gazette 2021, in the year 2020 there were 5421 cases registered against persons in J&K. In the year 2021, as many as 5921 cases were registered against persons in Jammu and Kashmir.

At the same time against the 3310 cases against property in 2020, Jammu and Kashmir reported 4016 such cases in the year 2021. Regarding the miscellaneous crime offences, the Crime Gazette read that a total of 16662 cases were registered in 2020, whereas, over 17356 cases were registered in the year 2022.

Further, there were 3543 cases of local and special laws reported in Jammu and Kashmir in the year 2020 and in the year 2021 as many as 4202 cases were registered in the Union Territory.

As per the Crime Gazette, there has been an increase in the number of cases of offences such as cruelty by husband (152 cases), kidnapping/abduction (137 cases), attempt to suicide (114 cases), molestation (95 cases), attempt to murder (26 cases), hurt/stabbing (26 cases), dowry death (7 cases) assault on public servant (6 cases), abetment of suicide (6 cases).

There has also been an increase in burglary offences (345 cases), other theft (248 cases), Motor Vehicle Theft (102 cases), cattle theft (42 cases), robbery (34 cases) and wire theft (9 cases).

As per the Crime Gazette, there has also been a noticeable increase in offences such as traffic incidents (599 cases), miscellaneous crime (235 cases), cheating (27 cases), arson (26 cases) and criminal breach of trust (23 cases).

However, there are certain offences which have recorded a decline including the essential commodities act (247 cases), the arms act (22 cases) and the copyright act (17 cases). Also, there has been a decrease in rape offences (39 cases), murder (13 cases), eve-teasing (12 cases) and culpable homicide (5 cases).
